The Joys of March
In like a lion, out like a lamb
While walking to work today, I was treated to a young man’s rendition of “Life Is a Highway” as he walked by me on the street. Now the street I was on was no side street. No, this was the main thoroughfare down the center of the city, and he was belting this song with his headphones on. If life were indeed a highway, he would sing his way through it.
Now I love a good acapella rendition of any song, but I gotta say, a version of “Windy” would have been better for today. Or “Up, Up and Away.” Or “Let’s Go Fly a Kite.” I don’t remember the last time I flew a kite; maybe I should put that on my to-do list for spring.
March in the northeast is a temperamental beast. A few days ago, it was 75 degrees. Today it reached about 46. Even knowing the temperature, you don’t know if it will be a pleasant 75 or an “okay, there is no way this is 75 degrees. I have multiples layers on” when you go outside. But in a way, that is what makes March interesting. Because how boring would it be if you knew precisely how the weather would feel when you were outside?
So when it gets cold and frigid like today, I think to myself…. “Yeah, this is not fun, but get excited about those first few warm days where everyone is in a great mood. Those days are going to be awesome. You can make it through the cold. It’s only a few more weeks.”
I may need to repeat that statement several times in my head, but it eventually works. (Sort of). And bonus, if you feel the need to sing a song, “Windy” is a great one.
