The Caterpillar Cake

Presently, I am watching The Great British Baking Show (which is a joy of a show if you haven’t seen it), and the technical challenge for the “Party Episode” is making a caterpillar cake. Therefore, hilarity ensues because these bakers are now running around and commenting about forgetting to put on the antennas and working on their faces.

And you know what, I love it all. All of these caterpillar cakes are making me smile. These are cakes that evoke childhood parties. I never had a caterpillar cake at my birthday parties growing up, but I remember them. For these British bakers, they were a regular feature from their childhood. You can tell by how their faces lit up when the challenge was mentioned.

And don’t we all have childhood memories like that? Memories of laughing hysterically at a clown duo who probably weren’t all that funny, but I thought they were great — memories of bouncy castles and sleepovers and, of course, cake.

Come to think of it, cake seems always to be a part of birthday parties. I have no idea how that tradition started, but I think it’s firmly rooted by this point.

So I will conclude with this, let them eat cake.

No, that’s not correct.

How about — may you always celebrate a birthday with a cake and if it’s a caterpillar, well, how great is that? Yeah, I do believe that’s better.
