Net Worth

Are we just how much we own? Net worth is simply assets minus liabilities. It’s what we own minus any debts we owe.

I hate the term. Is this really how we determine the worthiness of a person? If you are of the Christian background, is St. Peter going to be sitting at the pearly gates with a calculator figuring out your assets minus your liabilities — I mean I hope not?

So this is what I’ve decided should go into determining someone’s net worth:

  1. Did they make someone else’s life better? +1.
  2. Did they volunteer when they could? +1
  3. Did they make faces at kids just to make them laugh? +1
  4. Did they hold a baby that wasn’t theirs or volunteer to entertain someone else’s child so a parent or caregiver could have five minutes to go to the bathroom? +1
  5. Were they kind when they could have chosen otherwise? +1
  6. Did they recycle? Did they walk an extra block to throw something out so they wouldn’t litter? +1
  7. Did they try to be open to other people’s viewpoints? Did they try to learn about people/cultures that were different from theirs? +1
  8. Did they take time to show appreciation to those who cared for them? +1
  9. Did they do the best they could? +1
  10. Did they love when they could? +1

Look, a heart is bigger than a wallet. Let’s judge people on that, why don’t we?
