How to Treat a Rainy Day

Today is one of those gross icky days. The kind of winter day where the sky remains a sort of dull white and it is just sleeting precipitation all day long.

Now I’ve read that writers should make a reader “feel like they are there” instead of just telling them it’s raining. Okay, so this rain storm wasn’t a “Singin’ In the Rain” experience where people were happy and dancing in the rain. This rain storm wasn’t even “Twister” where the storms were kind of cool. This was doldrums personified — except it was weather-fied? It was as if today was the day we celebrated all of the dreariness in the world. We would have held a parade except no one would have had the energy to plan it or execute it.

Now as I write this, I have a blanket around my shoulder and a blanket on my legs, slippers and sweatpants because rule 1 of rainy days: comfort. Wear your hoodies. Do not put on actual pants, and this includes jeans. Does it have a zipper or buttons? It qualifies as actual pants.

Rule 2 of rainy days: find something nostalgia good on TV. This isn’t the day to get into the foreign language documentary that everyone is talking about. This is the day to go back to your comfort TV. I Love Lucy, Derry Girls, Friends, Golden Girls — if it puts a smile on your face, I say go for it.

Rule 3 of rainy days: Eat something comforting. It’s a soup kind of day. Or I mean it would have been a soup kind of day if I didn’t make food in the Crockpot over the weekend and so will now be eating Fiesta Fun Surprise for the…
