Have you ever had a Pumple Cake?
Philadelphia is known for their many food creations.
The cheesesteak. Water ice. Tastykake Butterscotch Krimpets.
But did you know we are also home to the world-famous Pumple Cake??
That’s right. The Pumple Cake is made by Flying Monkey Bakery and is located in Reading Terminal Market.
In case you were wondering — what is a pumple cake? It is the turducken of cakes. It has two layers — on the bottom is pumpkin pie in a chocolate cake, and on the top is apple pie in a vanilla cake, and the entire thing is covered in frosting.
I have wanted to try this Frankenstein’s monster of cakes for years, but this was the year that I finally took the plunge.
And you know what? Just like turducken, it’s not terrible. I would have never thought to put a pumpkin pie in a chocolate cake, but it somehow goes together. And let’s be honest here: apple pie goes with everything.
So while I won’t necessarily be replicating the recipe in my kitchen (because that would require my baking to extend beyond brownies and a one-time adventure of banana bread,), I will always encourage you to try the pumple cake of your town.
You may find a new love of your own — or at least a new taste sensation.
