Fly Eagles Fly
It’s a Philly thing
Last night the beloved Philadelphia Eagles played and lost in the Superbowl. They had a great game, but unfortunately, the Kansas City Chiefs were better. It happens.
Philadelphia fans get a bad rap. People bring up that we threw snowballs at Santa Claus. This story is from 1968. People bring up that we boo supporters of other teams. Some people do, and many people don’t. I don’t believe we are unique in this regard.
What people forget to mention is that the heart of the city bleeds whatever team is playing. In one of the country’s largest cities with all different types of people, the Eagles, the Sixers, the Flyers, and the Phillies are the great unify-er. In a city where there are problems everywhere, sports bring people together. People can greet each other with “go birds,” and everyone knows what it means.
When we played the 49ers, I was walking down the street and saw someone tell a Niners fan that they didn’t like their team but appreciated them as a person.
That is the Philadelphian. I’ve heard people in Philly be described as they might insult you to your face but will then help you out immediately after that. This is accurate. There is a lack of filter that is endearing.
Philadelphia fans are passionate, and this loss hurts. But the city will lick its wounds and be there to support the next team that is up to play because that is what we do. More importantly, that is who we are.
Thank you, Eagles, for a great season and for giving us all a reason to be together.
