I kid you not, this is a thing

Happy Spunky Old Broads Day! Apparently, this day was created to celebrate women and “dispel the myth about life automatically winding up for women once they hit the 50 mark.”

This has never been anything I have thought about because my mom-mom was the definition of a spunky old broad, so I never thought of older women being otherwise. You get older, and you become spunky. It was something that naturally occurred.

Did your mom-mom leave a party by having the band play “Hello Dolly?” Mine did.

Did your mom-mom swim at the community pool with a snorkel so she didn’t have to raise her head for air? Yup, that’s mine as well. She also would walk a mile a day.

Did your mom-mom see the Electric Slide being done on Oprah, taped it, and bring it to every family party until she was satisfied that the entire family knew it? Yeah, you see where I’m going here, and it involves a lot of shuffling to the right and left.

This is a true story about my mom-mom. We belonged to the same pool, and one day, I saw her come back from taking a shower after she had been in the pool and was getting ready to leave. Being an obnoxious/lovable granddaughter, I gave her a big hug while sopping wet. After I did this, my mom-mom said, “I must be a lesbian because that felt so good.” Yup, that’s my grandmother, and those were the last words she spoke to me, for she passed a couple of days later.

She, indeed, was a character and a half. So here’s to you mom-mom and all the “spunky old broads” worldwide, inspiring their granddaughters with their joie de vivre nature. We are lucky to have known you.
