Dancing Queen

Yesterday I participated in an online zoom event through Daybreaker in celebration of Latin Heritage Month. There was a Zumba class and then an hour long dance party with performances from the Gipsy Kings, Gloria Estefan, Los Del Rio and the Wailers. People zoomed in from all over the world which was pretty awesome! Now several things came to mind over the two hour dance fest….

  1. I have trouble remembering what I had for lunch yesterday and yet the moves to the Macarena are apparently embedded in my mind. It was almost as if I was in a trance — the song started and I immediately went into the dance moves. You know the movies where the townspeople are put under a spell and they all walk blindly to their doom? (I’m looking at you Hocus Pocus and the scene with Sarah Jessica Parker and all the children.) I wouldn’t do that. I would question it. I would be like “eh random woman singing on a broom above me, this doesn’t seem like a good idea.” However…if they put on the Macarena, I’m done for. Also I took five years of Spanish classes and I still have no idea what the words are in the Macarena except for “hey, Macarena!”
  2. Does using one hips while dancing come naturally to some people? I’m watching people merengue all over the place and I just looked like the Scarecrow after he came down from the pole. It was similar to Pinnochio when he got his legs. “I got no strings to hold me down” — yeah more like “I got no strings to hold me up.” In case you need another Disney movie reference, think Bambi when he tries to stand on ice.
